Free Antivirus Server 2012 R2 !!

Anyone know of free anti-virus for Server 2012 R2? - Spiceworks

ClamWin is a Free Antivirus program for Microsoft Windows 8/ 7 / Vista / XP / Me / 2000 / 98 and Windows Server 2012, 2008 and 2003. http:/ / www.clamwin.com. by DarrenCrimson on Nov 7, 2013 at 11:28 UTC 1st Post

If it's a test server, why not try a trial version of some antiviruses? Most of the big ones will have a trial version available, or just contact the AV reseller for some trials.

Hi there, we manage our Servers with the latest version of SEP, we have used this for years, however I would recommend not putting a 'Free' version of any AV onto your Server as it doesn't give you the full protection that you Server deserves. However, if the Server is just for testing/evaluation purposes I would say Advanced System Care 7/Ultimate.

However I still cannot stress enough how important proper AV is, not only will it save you your sanity, but it will also keep the company safe.

All the best with finding your Software and I hope you find out what you need testing your Server 2012

There's only one completely free anti virus available and it's clamping, you can find it on sourceforge but it doesn't scan in real time like paid versions.

IIRC no free AV works on NOS assets, software will detect it as a server / commercial application, so not free, and will not load / work

I'd cast my vote for Vipre. It works great for us, and while not free, the low cost is well worth paying. I'm assuming you've spent some money on this test server, so I'd like to think just a little bit more money is worth protecting your investment.

Free antivirus software may seem like a bargain. But it doesn't provide the robust protection you need against today's biggest online threats.

Remember that that free software programs will not give you everything that the paid ones do. Most free software packages offer little to no technical support if you run into difficulties. They may offer online discussion boards or bill you for over the phone technical support.

I've used clamwin on servers where people were too cheap to pay for AV. There was no way I was having no protection. Just set it to run a full scan regularly because it doesn't have on-access scanning. Makes the server run slow but they can suck it if they don't want to pay.

Ah clamwin!  I used that on some computers once.  They got a virus and shut the computer lab down.  You get what you pay for!

You can use Microsoft's System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager.  It contains the EndPoint client virus protection that supports Windows 2012 R2. If you've got a MSDN membership it is the way to go.

Using the above switch for Microsoft Security Essentials doesn't work. Application detects not valid OS and gives message to that effect

After a recent run in with DMA Locker I’m looking for affordable ways of beefing up my security. As an IT Pro I run a Windows Server 2012 R2 environment at home for trial and test purposes. After a recent run in with DMA Locker I’m looking for affordable ways of beefing up my security. As an IT Pro I run a Windows Server 2012 R2 environment at home for trial and test purposes. The problem with this is that Windows Server does not have Anti Virus built in and you need a third party product. Server AV is ‘business grade’ meaning ‘expensive’ and out of reach of the enthusiast.

SCEP client comes as part of the System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) product which you can download as a trial. It’s then a simple task of extracting the Client installer from the package and installing.

Now your done. I’m not sure of the legality of this exactly, you are after all running software downloaded from Microsoft. I also don’t know at time of writing if this Client subset expires along with the SCCM trial. I’ll let you know.

[SOLVED] Free AV for 2012 R2 server - Windows Server - Spiceworks

Raid5 is not recommended with spinning disks, only SSD's. Also, Cisco's Immunet works on Server 2012 R2. OP noted is SSD. So I don't see an issue, I would just use VMware or Xencenter on USB and then USB for the VMs. I would try to use a Business paid AV though. by stevebackhus2 on Apr 14, 2017 at 05:20 UTC

I've got a 2012 R2 RAID 5 server at my house and would like to know what free AV would be good to use.  I loaded a version of Avast on it to begin with, but it kept making my MS Office 2013 files take almost a minute to open.  Any suggestions on something else to try?

Hey OP, couple of things! *puts on vendor hat, which I don't actually have but if I did it'd have a shiny ameoba logo on it*

We do have Avast for Business which supports Windows Server 2012 R2. There are two paid versions of it available right now (but there are free trials) so you can give it a shot, see how it works in your environment. If you only need one license, it's pretty affordable and we have 20% off at the moment too.

Did you load Avast Free 2017 (Consumer version) on your server? It's not directly compatible with servers, so this may create issues for you -- it's compatible with Win10, Win8.1, Win8, Win7, Vista, and XP SP3.

It definitely should not take any noticeable amount of time to open a file unless something else is wrong; performance wise you shouldn't even notice Avast is running, being light on systems is one of our top priorities. (See AV-comparatives performance impact tests) Of course, this also depends on the specs and if you have an active scan running, which could slow things down during the scan, again depending on specs.

One last thing to add -- Avast for Business now incorporates several new technologies (CyberCapture) that are designed to help protect against zero-days/ransomware. Insert buzzwords such as AI, machine learning you get the drift. Point is that while AV is part of a layered solution, "antivirus" these days should have several protection layers in itself and is becoming an outdated term IMO. (EDIT: for clarity, Behavior Shield is currently only available on Windows workstations, apologies for any confusion)

Anti virus by itself does not do much good anymore these days, sure there are free versions, such as Sophos home etc

I'm using a 500 SSD for the OS and 4 2TB HDD's for the RAID 5.  No it's not for a lab setup this is an operational server used for file storage and backups.  I have the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed on it.

Since the only one of my servers that ever downloads files is my WSUS server and the only other resources that head out are my DNS servers I use ClamAV.  It doesn't do real time scanning but it does scan the entire host and all the guests nightly.  My workstations run Windows Defender only with an occassional MalwareBytes manual scan.

Sounds like this has nothing to do with Server and more to do with looking for freeware. Why not post to Freeware instead?

Vipre Business Premium works on servers and is relatively inexpensive. You also get the benefit of a central management console.

Are you opening the MS word files on the server itself or over the network?  Are you using the server like a desktop?

AVG it is not the best to config but It works better than most freeware (and some paid ware)  I use this while waiting on new AV software.

I tried the version from Ninite but it said it would not work for servers.  I use Ninite frequently and it is a great website

I've loaded this on my server and opened an excel file with no problems.  Thanks for the information on this subject.
